3MM: Discomfort, Gay Crimes & Smoking

3 MINUTE MONDAY

Hi friend,

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable” is a mantra for many people who do hard pursuits.

Endurance athletes, MMA fighters, bodybuilders, CrossFitters.

So how is it that somebody can run an ultramarathon for 100 miles, but not be able to have a difficult conversation with their partner?

The same person who’s prepared to get up at 6am and jump in the ice plunge and stick to their diet, is also afraid to tell an employee that they’re underperforming, or open up to their friend about how they're feeling mentally.

I'm not saying that the cold plunge and a 6am run isn’t tough, it is.

But it also seems obvious that there are certain domains of your life where you're prepared to be tough, and there’s others where your “I do hard things” muscle is entirely none-existent.

In fact I’d go as far as to say that some people use their physical capacity as a crutch to excuse or distract themselves from facing difficult feelings.

TLDR: A lot of people are comfortable being uncomfortable, as long as they get to choose the discomfort. And just because you crush things physically does not make you brave emotionally.

(As someone who has lifted heavy objects for 20 years but only done emotional work for 2, I know this paradox deeply)

MODERN WISDOM

I do a podcast where I pretend to have a British accent.

This week’s upcoming episodes:

Monday.
Dr Sasha Hamdani - why are some people so sensitive? What can you do as a big feeler of emotions to better navigate the modern world? What about being assertive and dealing with rejection? Listen now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Thursday.
Ben Greenfield, Dr Gabrielle Lyon & Brigham Buhler: Biohacking Roundtable - what are the most exciting peptides everyone’s taking? What are the real health effects of taking testosterone? What are the best new biohacking tools no one knows about?

Saturday.
Matt McCusker - the difference between British whites and American whites. What 10 years of being an ethical drug dealer is like. Why is everyone wrong about the Lindsay Clancy case?

THINGS I'VE LEARNED

1.
Gay doesn’t pay (illegally).

“Gay men commit fewer crimes than straight men, whereas lesbians commit more than straight women.

This pattern is most plausibly explained in terms of sex-atypical prenatal hormones rather than social factors.”

— Rob Henderson & A Billion Years of Sex Differences by Steve Stewart-Williams

2.
The most common reasons for failing, in order.

1) Never starting.
2) Quitting too soon.
3) Not doing enough volume.
4) Not doing it consistently enough.
5) Doing too many different things.
6) Not shooting big enough. — Alex Hormozi

3.
New habit hack; become a dictator.

The former dictator of Turkmenistan banned smoking because he wanted to quit himself.

LIFE HACK

Advice for guys.

“If she asks about the first outfit, say you like it, but want to see another one.

Then, say you also like the second one, but prefer the first.

This will save you both another six outfit changes.” — Degenoutoften & TheTinMen

Big love,
