3 MINUTE MONDAYHi friend, I've been working really hard on my new live show and I'm nervous and terrified and excited all together. Dublin is sold out, UK tickets still available 🚀 Get your tickets before they're gone - https://chriswilliamson.live/ “Cynicism in relationships is a defence against heartbreak and betrayal, and it's very effective at that.
The trouble is when you get so good at it that you accidentally defend yourself from ever falling in love.” — Mark Ryan
Cynicism is a guarded response which sets yourself up against disappointment. Its role within the system is to protect you against experiencing anything bad.It is a pre-emptive strike against a perceived threat. If I tell myself that 'all women are bad', then I'm less likely to seek a relationship and, as a consequence, I'm never going to feel the pain of rejection. If I tell myself that 'everything is shit' or that 'things will never get better', then I am excused of ever having to try at anything. It's more comfortable to get fatalistic and call it pragmatism. The cope is framing hope as pathetic and embarrassing and optimism as delusion. The upside of never trying is never having to feel the pain of failure. And it’s a devil’s bargain. MODERN WISDOMI do a podcast where I pretend to have a British accent. This week’s upcoming episodes: Monday. Thursday. Saturday. THINGS I'VE LEARNED1. “In a study of groups that met regularly for several months, the people who scored highest on narcissism were at first the most popular people in the group. By the end of several months, they were the least popular. People who love themselves the most do not make the best friends.” — Rob Henderson 2. “Putting 10x more effort into one thing you care about has a disproportionately more positive impact than doing 10x more things.” — Jonny Miller 3. Every time you behave in a way you know is wrong, you create another thing that needs managing. Now you need rationalisations and secrecy and to remember what you told whom. You need to protect your conception of yourself from evidence supplied by yourself. Living according to your values is therefore not merely morally desirable, it's cognitively efficient. Integrity gives you fewer tabs open. A clear conscience is an underrated productivity tool. LIFE HACKA question when you’re unsure how you feel. “What would I have to feel if I couldn’t feel ashamed right now?” — Joe Hudson Big love, Try my productivity drink Neutonic. PS |

3 MINUTE MONDAY Hi friend, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” is a mantra for many people who do hard pursuits. Endurance athletes, MMA fighters, bodybuilders, CrossFitters. So how is it that somebody can run an ultramarathon for 100 miles, but not be able to have a difficult conversation with their partner? The same person who’s prepared to get up at 6am and jump in the ice plunge and stick to their diet, is also afraid to tell an employee that they’re underperforming, or open up to their...
